CSS and GRAPHICS tips

CSS lets you define types of text and other elements on your pages.

This means you can change the CSS file setting and whole pages will automatically change.

You need to create a CSS file. - file, new, css style sheet then choose a starting point.

Then create a html file, then click in properties section on  style, and choose attach style sheet.

Then you can edit the style sheet with your own custom settings, eg Title: you can set the font, the colour, size etc.

This means you can define any element of a page and link it to the CSS.

Right click in the CSS area on the top right, and choose new, then choose, class, then write in the name for the class (eg title) this will appear in the style section once you have done this.

You can then highlight text and then choose the style of text in the style box.

NEXT save the page you have created as Template.  This can then be resaved under different names to give you a copy of your page.  You would want to set up the layout and standard links on this page, so that you don't need to redo this each time.

See this video for ideas :

FINALLY:
Whilst you can do the ebook without using CSS it would take more time and be very fiddly to update the settings across up to 20-30 pages eg. changing font size and colour on every page.

GRAPHICS:
You can use flash buttons for links to other pages, I would recommend that you use this with caution as errors can occur if you don't save the files in the right places.  It introduces complexity = more that can go wrong.

My recommendation is to use Powerpoint word art , then right click and save as picture, then use the picture file for the link.

Design and structure of the E book

Design and Testing
  • You should produce a rough design of your e-book in the form of a diagram to illustrate the basic navigation and structure.  This should be put in your e-portfolio but NOT in the e-book itself.
  • You should always ensure that, at standard screen resolutions, all the content on every page can be viewed without the user having to scroll down.
  • You should NEVER have links to web pages in your e-book (because these links will not work in 100 years time).  Use screen dumps instead.
  • Think very carefully about navigation.  Use navigation bars AND forward and back buttons on pages.  Your user should NEVER reach a dead-end and have to click the Back button on his/her browser.
  • Have a consistent theme in the e-book rather than a "hotchpotch" of different colours, fonts and styles.
  • Remember your audience and the purpose of the e-book at all times.  It would be a good idea to have a "Welcome" page with an introduction to the e-book aimed at this audience.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of "accessibility issues" e.g. have a text alternative for pictures/animations, think about colour and text size.
  • Spell-check and proof-read.
  • Copy the folder containing the e-book to a CD-R or a USB Flash Drive.  Then test every hyperlink and component.
  • You can use the testing PC in IT1 to check that links and pictures work off of the network.
  • Get other people to use your e-book to help you with the testing and evaluation.  Design a questionnaire for them to fill in.

FW: Things to write about/and not to write about on your blogs

Subject: Things to write about/and not to write about on your blogs

Remember you do not need to write about how to set up the services you are looking at, eg a write up of how to setup a twitter account is not actually the purpose of the project.  You need to focus on the topic of how the information is affecting and shaping our lives.

So for example in terms of twitter we should be writing about how to use twitter to post and reply, and read messages, things like trending topics are interesting and important to look at,  and how it is affecting society eg news stories and  your own evaluations of the use of twitter by yourself and others.

Dreamweaver tutorials:

In Mondays lesson we will be working on our eportfolios, we will be looking at creating the e book, and working out the structure for the ebook.

In preparation you should look at the tasks below.

If you are new to dreamweaver you should check out the tutorials on:

1. http://www.dida-delivered.org/delivered/gym/index.htm

Choose Website authoring software from the drop down menu.

Work through the 7 options listed on the left.  In each option work through the tasks and make notes on any difficult tasks, that you may forget, in a word file.

This is a good site as you can do tutorials without needing the software to be installed.

2. http://www.teach-ict.net/software/dreamweaver/dreamweaver.htm : look here for video tutorials for these you need to have dreamweaver installed to practice.

Tweetage Wasteland : Pull Over Before You Read This
http://tweetagewasteland.com/2010/08/pull-over-before-you-read-this/

Pull Over Before You Read This

The main difference between me and Dr. Frank Ryan is that I'm lucky enough not to live near any cliffs.
Ryan, the plastic surgeon behind many celebrity looks, was reportedly tweeting about his dog just before he drove to his death off a Malibu cliff. A person so familiar with the power of technology to change our bodies may have fallen victim to its power to distract our minds.
While Ryan paid the ultimate price for the mixing of social media and driving, he is certainly not alone in that behavior. The act of sending text messages while driving is so prevalent that at least nineteen states have already created laws banning the practice.
And I'm not pointing thumbs here. Have I ever checked email, read incoming tweets or responded to a text message while behind the wheel of a car? Yes. I'm usually at a stoplight or stuck in motionless traffic when I actually use my phone's virtual keyboard. That factor might make might my behavior slightly less risky, but it doesn't make it any less stupid.
While I can imagine either sending or receiving a message so pressing that an action would have to be taken at that very moment, I've never actually experienced such a scenario. The urgency that drives me to check Twitter or read an email while in the car is entirely a creation of my own mind.
All of this data can wait until later – and much of it can wait until never.
The temptation for drivers to participate in the realtime, social stream will only increase in coming years as Twitter, Facebook and other apps are built into our dashboards. Car manufacturers will attempt to include safeguards into their systems to prevent drivers from actually texting with one hand while they steer with the other. But the inclusion of the realtime web in our cars will be one more powerful suggestion that the information in the stream is so urgent and critical that it can't wait until you park the car.
And drivers aren't the only distracted folks on the road. Take a few commute-hour drives down 2nd Street in San Francisco and you'll see what I mean. They are everywhere: Pedestrian zombies walking across the middle of a four lane road with their attention glued to a handheld. The compulsion to keep up with the stream has become so powerful that we're gradually abandoning one of the first and most basic rules we all learned as kids. Instead of looking both ways before we cross the street, we look one way; down at our phones.
And what's the point? Just because the technology is realtime doesn't mean our behavior always has to be. Forget the obvious issues like walking into an intersection or driving off the road. When it comes to the net, we're habitually guilty of LUI (Living Under the Influence). We sacrifice real life for realtime. We tweet vacation photos while we're still on vacation. We share anecdotes about our kids when we're spending time with them. And yes, we read and publish content from the driver's seat of our cars.
Let me speak for everyone you have ever met, from a recent acquaintance to your closest relative: We can wait until you get home to see the photos from your vacation. You can share the funny anecdote about your kids after they've gone to bed. And nothing you've ever tweeted or shared is urgent enough for you do it while driving.
I'm not arguing that pressing the stream's pause button is an easy thing to do. The internet twitch is a powerful force. But it's worth taking a hard look at our behavior now because the omnipresence of the realtime web will only increase. We should probably try to figure out how to best manage that reality now because there are plenty of cliffs up ahead.

As well as talking about your use of blogger, you should also compare this to another service, eg tumblr.com or twitter.com. These are quite different as they are designed to be micro blogs which are by definition shorter and often used just to share links or comments about things.  They also tend to have people adding short comments.

Add a section to your blog about micro blogs, setup and try out tumblr.com and show how tumblr blogs tend to be different to stand ones.
